Torrevieja

Torrevieja used to be a fishing village situated by the sea with two big salt mines from which it has its healthy climate. Originally it was a tiny fishing village dependent on the "white gold" which was the salt extracted here. The sea and the salt were the basis of the economy here for a long time. At present, the salt lakes which were the source of the white gold have been designated as national parks where you can admire the variety of birds that live here. The town began to thrive in the 19th century when king Carlos moved the administration of the salt mines to Torrevieja and then he took care of the infrastructure and the legal system of the town. Today salt is the number one export product of Torrevieja and Torrevieja is the leading European salt producer. You cannot talk about Torrevieja without mentioning the 1829 earthquake. Presently Torrevieja is widely known as a tourist resort. It has got a healthy microclimate thanks to its salt lakes. The beaches are of a good quality and they are awarded a blue flag every year. From Alicante you can get here only by Costa Azul buses. It is located an hour drive from Alicante airport and half an hour drive from Murcia Airport. It attracts loads of tourists using cars in the summer. During peak season there are thousands of tourists on one short city beach. The rest of Torrevieja coastline is rocks and concrete. The architecture of the city is based on the large panel blocks. There are no old buildings. You can get to the salt lakes only by car. There are no distinct walking trails. The tourist information office and shops are closed at the time of siesta (1:00 till 5:00).
