Art

Spanish art has gained the international appreciation for a few reasons: it is diverse, innovative, exciting and has a large collection of works that epitomise the timelessness of art, which makes a great impression on viewers. Over the centuries, many world-renowned painters and sculptors came from Spain, which today is a country supporting the development of young and talented artists.

Beginning with the Baroque brush strokes by Diego Velazquez and the religious paintings by El Greco and coming to the concept of Cubism by Pablo Picasso and the Surreal sphere inhabited by Salvador Dali, the Spanish art is one of the best in the world and attracts millions of art lovers to the country each year.

There is no better place to admire the best Spanish artists' works than a museum or an art gallery. Museum Prado and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid are two most important places in the country devoted to art and owning the richest collections of works from Baroque to Renaissance and from Surrealism to Impressonism. There are equally valuable collections at the Salvador Dali Museum in Figueras near Barcelona, Picasso Museum in Malaga and Museum of Fine Arts in Seville.

Museo del Prado- located in Madrid. One of the most important and the richest museums in the world. It was founded in 1819 by King Ferdinand VII, encouraged by his wife, Maria Isabel de Braganza. It is an original classicistic building erected in 1785 according to the project by Juan de Villanueva. It was expanded a few times in the 20th century.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía - located on the sight of the first General Hospital. The permanent exhibition is on the second and the fourth floor. It contains, among others, rooms dedicated to Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro. The collection of the museum also includes paintings such as Guernica, Landscape of Cadaques and Accident.

The museum was officially opened on 10th September 1992. The main building of the museum is an 18th century hospital. The museum is mostly devoted to Spanish art but there are also a few international works by artists such as Robert Delaunay, Yves Tanguy, Man Ray, Jacques Lipchitz, Lucio Fontana and Yves Klein.

The museum also has an artistic library, with a collection of over 100 thousand books, 3.500 audio recordings and 1000 videos.
