Guardamar del Segura is famous for its white sandy beaches. It is located on the mouth of the river Segura, north of La Mata and Torrevieja in the Southern Costa Blanca. At the beginning Guardamar was an area of Phoenician fishermen and farmers and it was called Alonis. Later, Arabs called the place Guald- a- amar (River of Sand) which is today's name of the town. In Spanish "guardar" means "safekeeping", "mar" means "the sea" which might be another explanation of the name.
Guardamar overlooks long sandy dunes with pine and eucalyptus forests, which makes it almost paradise. It is a busy town and it is popular with tourists. Guardamar is a stretch of beaches, beautiful parks and restaurants.
This beautiful tourist resort has over 11 kilometres of a stunning golden beach which is connected to the Torrevieja beach, La Mata.
Guardamar del Segura is situated north of Torrevieja and south of Alicante on the southern Costa Blanca.
From the north to the south there are the beaches of: Los Tusales - a nude beach, Los Viveros, De la Babilonia, Playa Centro, La Roqueta, El Moncayo, Playa del Campo and Les Ortigues. All the beaches have golden sand, dunes and are surrounded by pine, palm and eucalyptus trees. The beaches are so wide and long that they are never crowded, even in the summer time when the town is busiest. Sun loungers are available on the beaches and they are cleaned every day. In Playa Centro and Playa Roqueta you can enjoy water sports.
