The climate

Costa Blanca boasts very favourable weather conditions, the unquestionable proof of which is 2800 hours of sunshine a year and the average annual temperature of around 18C. The favourable microclimate makes this region a perfect place to live all year round, especially that winter is almost imperceptible here, and the spring-summer atmosphere can be enjoyed on most days of the year.

The Mediterranean climate is distinguished by mild, rainy winters and hot and dry summers. The spring and the autumn, on the other hand, are changeable in terms of temperatures and rainfall. Without doubt it is a climate typical to the area of the Mediterranean Basin but it also occurs in different parts of the world differing by the range of temperatures. Rainfall is not usually large, although there are areas where the values are over 1000mm. What is important, rainfall never occurs in the summer, so the occurence of rain is reverse to that of the tropical climate which causes hydrologic stress.

Throughout the year, the average temperatures stay over 5C but their values change with the seasons. There are cooler months, when the temperatures fall below 18C and the warmer months with the temperatures typical of the Mediterranean climate, over 22C.

The Mediterranean climate geographically is situated on the west coast of continental masses, between the marine climate and the desert climate. It is, in fact, the combination of the two and that is why in the winter it is mostly marine climate and in the summer the dominating climate is the desert climate. The closer to the North Pole, the more mild and rainy the climate becomes. On the other hand, the closer to the equator, the drier the climate.

On the Mediterranean climate terrains for years people have developed the practice of growing the so called Mediterranean Trilogy of wheat, grapes and olives. It should be noted that olives can only be grown in the Mediterranean climate areas. The agriculture is also well devoleped in the dry areas where the complex irrigation systems enable growing huge amounts of fruit (oranges, lemons, apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, medlars etc.) and vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, zucchinis, onions, garlic, carrots etc.) as well as olive, almond trees and carob trees.

Spain is a beautiful and a sunny country! Come here and see how charming the climate is.
